What is Udyam Registration?
Udyam Registration is the Government of India's official online registration for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). On completing it, your business receives a permanent Udyam Registration Number (URN) and an e-certificate issued by the Ministry of MSME through the portal udyamregistration.gov.in.
What is MSME registration?
MSME registration is the popular name for Udyam Registration — the single, government-recognised way to formally register a Micro, Small or Medium Enterprise in India and become eligible for MSME schemes, subsidies and priority lending.
Are Udyam Registration and MSME registration the same thing?
Yes. Since 1 July 2020, MSME registration is done only through the Udyam Registration system. So 'MSME registration', 'Udyam registration' and 'Udyam Aadhaar registration' all refer to the same official process.
What does MSME stand for?
MSME stands for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. These are defined under the MSMED Act, 2006 and classified by their investment in plant, machinery or equipment and their annual turnover.
What is a Udyam Registration Number (URN)?
The Udyam Registration Number (URN) is a unique, permanent ID issued to your enterprise on registration, in the format UDYAM-XX-00-0000000 (state code, district code and a serial number). It is your lifelong MSME identity and never needs renewal.
What is the Udyam Registration Certificate?
The Udyam Registration Certificate is the e-certificate proving your MSME status. It carries your URN, enterprise details, classification (Micro/Small/Medium) and a dynamic QR code that links to your details on the government portal.
When was Udyam Registration introduced?
Udyam Registration came into effect on 1 July 2020, replacing the older Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM) and EM-II processes with a fully online, PAN- and GST-integrated system.
What is the difference between Udyam Registration and Udyog Aadhaar?
Udyog Aadhaar (UAM) was the old MSME registration used before July 2020. Udyam Registration is its successor — it is paperless, validates data directly from PAN, GST and Income Tax records, and re-classifies your enterprise automatically each year. Existing Udyog Aadhaar holders must migrate to Udyam.
Is Udyam Registration mandatory in India?
Udyam Registration is not legally compulsory to run a business, but it is effectively essential to claim MSME benefits — collateral-free loans, subsidies, tender preferences and protection against delayed payments. Many banks and large buyers now ask for a Udyam Certificate.
What is the official Udyam Registration portal?
The only official Udyam Registration portal is https://udyamregistration.gov.in, run by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. Registration there is free of cost.
Who can apply for Udyam Registration?
Any enterprise engaged in manufacturing, production, processing or providing services can apply — including proprietorships, partnerships, LLPs, private limited companies, HUFs, co-operatives, societies and trusts — as long as it falls within the MSME investment and turnover limits.
What business activities are covered under MSME/Udyam?
Both manufacturing and service enterprises are covered, across thousands of activities classified by NIC (National Industrial Classification) codes. Wholesale and retail trade is also allowed (mainly for priority-sector lending benefits).
Can traders register under Udyam?
Yes. Since July 2021, wholesale and retail traders can register on Udyam under the relevant NIC codes. Traders primarily become eligible for priority-sector lending benefits through their Udyam Registration.
Is the Udyam Registration valid for a lifetime?
Yes. The Udyam Registration Number and certificate are permanent and do not expire or require renewal. Your Micro/Small/Medium category is simply re-assessed automatically each year from your ITR and GST data.
